Melvin Bradley, who has died aged 83, was an expert on mules and the author of such works as the two-volume The Missouri Mule: his origins and times, and Miniature and Hunting Mules of Missouri; he also founded the Missouri Muleskinners’ Society.Bradley, a professor at the University of Missouri, became fascinated by the animals as a barefoot farmer’s boy working a mule team in the Missouri cornfields. “I found that the mule has so much more personality than a horse.
